Michigan Republicans are Complicit in GOP’s Crusade to End Access to Legal Abortion in America

Access to safe, legal abortion in America took a devastating blow last night with POLITICO reporting on a leaked draft Supreme Court majority opinion that would strike down Roe v. Wade and open the door for 26 states including Michigan to immediately move to ban the right to abortion. Michigan Republicans are complicit in this all-out assault on women’s freedoms.

Michiganders should know Republican congressional candidates’ dangerous records on women’s reproductive freedom and health care:

• MI-03: John Gibbs has said he’s “100% pro-life in all cases” and said reports on the Supreme Court’s decision were “great news for women.”

• MI-03: Peter Meijer is “100% pro-life” and signed an amicus brief urging the Supreme Court to overturn Roe v. Wade. When the House of Representatives brought the Women’s Health Protection Act to the floor to protect reproductive freedoms and codify Roe into law, Meijer voted no.

• MI-07: Tom Barrett has said he’s “100% Pro-Life – No Exceptions” a position remarkably out of step of Michigan voters.

• MI-08: Paul Junge has said he is pro-life “at all times” and that Roe v. Wade created “made-up rights”

• MI-10: John James has said he would support Roe v. Wade being overturned and compared abortion to “genocide.” He’s described himself as “100% pro-life” – and “repeatedly dodged questions” about whether that includes in cases of rape, incest and if the mother’s life is at risk.
