Michigan Republicans on Notice After 19 Point Overperformance in Mid-Michigan Special Election

Detroit Free Press: “Tuesday’s results likely set off a few warning signs for Michigan Republicans”

On Tuesday, Michigan Democrats won a special election in a swing state senate district, overperforming by a whopping 19 points in “closely fought territory” that “includes portions of three counties, all of which President Trump carried in 2024.”

Chedrick Greene’s win in swing territory SD-35 means alarm bells are ringing for Tom Barrett, Bill Huizenga, and every Michigan Republican running for Congress.

REMINDER: SD-35 is located in the heart of battleground MI-08, a Trump +2 and Toss-Up district that is a key hold for the House majority.  This win is a sign of momentum for Kristen McDonald Rivet, who is going all gas, no brakes into November in Toss-Up MI-08.

DCCC Spokesperson Katie Smith:
“Michigan voters made it clear: they’ve had enough of Republicans prioritizing their party bosses and putting special interests ahead of working people. Michiganders are ready for new leadership to stop the chaos in Washington, and they’ll hold Tom Barrett, Bill Huizenga, and Michigan Republicans accountable this November.”

  • Michigan Advance: “But this race is also being viewed by leaders and pundits on both sides as a bellwether for the November 2026 midterms, both in Michigan and nationally, as Democrats across the country will seek to take back control of one or both chambers of Congress, while Michigan Democrats will seek to reclaim the state House, while maintaining control of the governor’s office and the state Senate.”
  • New York Times: “Still, both parties were eager to demonstrate strength in a district, northwest of Detroit, that includes some of the most closely fought territory in statewide and presidential elections. […] The district is home to blue-collar workers, who both parties covet, but who have drifted toward Republicans in recent elections. The district includes portions of three counties, all of which President Trump carried in 2024 as he narrowly won Michigan’s electoral votes.”
