Michigan Republicans Share Blame for the Overturning of Roe v. Wade

In the wake of the Supreme Court decision overturning 50 years of precedent, Michigan House Republican candidates must defend their unpopular, draconian record of fighting to overturn Roe and block access to abortion, and answer for their party’s plan for a nationwide abortion ban. Here’s where they stand:

  • MI-03: John Gibbs has said he’s “100% pro-life in all cases” and said reports on the Supreme Court’s decision were “great news for women.” In defending his extreme position that Michigan women should not be able to make their own health care decisions in cases of rape, incest, and when the mother’s life is as at risk, Gibbs said, “there are many great Americans all around the country who were actually conceived from rape.”

  • MI-03: Peter Meijer supports a nationwide abortion ban with no exceptions for rape or incest and signed an amicus brief urging the Supreme Court to overturn Roe v. Wade. When the House of Representatives brought the Women’s Health Protection Act to the floor to protect reproductive freedoms and codify Roe into law, Meijer voted no.

  • MI-07: Tom Barrett has said he’s “100% PRO-LIFE – NO EXCEPTIONS,” a position remarkably out of step of Michigan voters. Barrett also introduced legislation at the state level to criminalize abortion – with no exceptions for rape or incest – and throw doctors in prison.

  • MI-08: Paul Junge has said he is pro-life “at all times” and that Roe v. Wade created “made-up rights.” Junge supports banning abortion with no exceptions for rape or incest.

  • MI-10: John James has said he supports Roe v. Wade being overturned and compared abortion to “genocide.” He’s described himself as “100% pro-life” – and “repeatedly dodged questions” about whether that includes in cases of rape, incest and if the mother’s life is at risk.

Make no mistake: Michigan GOP candidates are on the wrong side of this issue. Polling conducted after the leak of the SCOTUS draft opinion overturning Roe shows: by a two-to-one margin, people oppose Roe being overturned; 80% of people believe abortion should be decided between a woman and her doctor; and nearly two-thirds of people oppose the GOP’s plan to institute a nationwide abortion ban.

DCCC spokesperson Elena Kuhn:
“Every Michigan Republican Congressional candidate bears responsibility for the devastating decision overturning Roe. Tom Barrett, John James, Paul Junge, John Gibbs, and Peter Meijer must answer for their record of attacking women’s personal freedoms and answer whether they stand with their party leaders’ plan to impose a draconian nationwide abortion ban.”
