This was an embarrassing week for Mike Gallagher:
** Voters in Wisconsin have been learning all week about Mike Gallagher’s extreme plan to cut seniors’ Social Security benefits down to the poverty level. Gallagher weakly tried to fight back with a fundraising email – that didn’t actually deny this accusation. In fact, Gallagher only reiterated his plan to “fix” Social Security.
By the way, Gallagher’s ideas all come from this guy, an advisor to George W. Bush who pushed to privatize Social Security, said that Social Security should be “sent to the slaughterhouse,” and about whom the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare said “would destroy Social Security and [promote] the President’s private accounts plans to achieve that goal.”
** Also this week, Gallagher was caught in an embarrassing spotlight: during his contentious and costly Republican primary, reports surfaced that Gallagher had failed to fill out employment info for a quarter of his donors. Gallagher was also forced to return donations that were illegally over the limit according to campaign finance law.
Now it seems he has never amended his filings – and the Wisconsin Democratic Party is calling for him to be straight with voters and disclose who his donors are.
Don’t forget that Mike Gallagher is being financed by a shady super PAC that has yet to disclose its donors – and whose treasurer is deeply involved with behind-the-scenes Wisconsin GOP power brokering.
“While Mike Gallagher is happy to slash seniors’ retirement benefits down to the poverty level and take tips from an adviser experts say would ‘destroy’ Social Security, he thinks he’s above the law enough not to tell voters who his donors are,” said Sacha Haworth of the DCCC. “Wisconsinites deserve the truth out of Mike Gallagher – but he’s not giving them the truth.”
