Los Angeles Times: Republicans like Garcia “can’t be pro-cop and pro-public safety while backing a proposal that undermines local law enforcement’s ability to police crime.”
Vulnerable California Republican Mike Garcia is hard at work manufacturing a false image of himself standing up for public safety. Yet, in Congress, Garcia has endorsed an extreme MAGA budget so riddled with law enforcement funding cuts that it would cripple local law enforcement nationwide.
While Garcia has preached support for law enforcement, including saying “defunding of police” is “destroying California communities,” the Republican Study Committee – which Garcia signed onto – famously promotes a plan to “reduce funding for Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS).” The COPS program has received essential funding for decades to improve community policing, fight the addiction crisis, and support efforts to prevent violence in schools.
For House Republicans like Garcia, projecting a tough-on-crime facade is the number one priority, leaving legislating to protect communities as a mere afterthought.
DCCC Spokesperson Dan Gottlieb:
“Mike Garcia’s seemingly never-ending hypocrisy doesn’t just show complete disregard for his constituents – it also includes an agenda that will cripple law enforcement and make California less safe for working families.” |
