Mike Garcia ‘Doesn’t Have Any Concerns’ About Bill that Slashes Programs Hard-Working Americans Depend on

A report last week from the Washington Post described vulnerable Rep. Mike Garcia as not “hav[ing] any concerns” about explaining to CA-27 voters why he is supporting a bill that will “cut education, veterans medical care, cancer research, Meals on Wheels, food safety, and law enforcement” funding.

As MAGA Republicans hold the U.S. economy hostage and threaten default in order to force cuts to programs American families depend on, Kevin McCarthy and far-right Republicans are rallying around their brinkmanship legislation. Unfortunately for Californians, Garcia is choosing to side with these extremists rather than standing up for his constituents. This Garcia-endorsed plan would:

• Cut 22% of funding for education, veterans’ health care, child care, and opioids treatment – which could gut 81,000 jobs from the Veterans Health Administration, cause 30 million fewer veteran outpatient visits, cut 200,000 children off from Head Start programs, eliminate 180,000 children from child care programs;

• Repeal the clean energy investments from the Inflation Reduction Act that are bringing over a hundred thousand jobs back to the United States;

• Gut programs that ensure families do not starve, cut border security, and defund law enforcement agencies;

• Cut funding that is helping prevent the top 1% from cheating on their taxes and ensuring everyday families receive their tax returns on time;

• Roll back bipartisan efforts recently signed into law that are already lowering costs, creating better-paying jobs, strengthening our national security, supporting our veterans, and protecting our environment.

According to a report from Third Way, if Mike Garcia were to successfully cause the U.S. to default, 401K savings could be slashed, 30 year mortgages and the prices of everyday goods could skyrocket, millions of jobs would be lost, and the national debt would increase by $850 billion.
