| Today, Mike Johnson was joined by far-right Freedom Caucus leaders Andy Harris and Chip Roy – giving them a megaphone for their dangerous, costly agenda to repeal the Affordable Care Act and further reminding the American public that House Republicans oppose saving the ACA tax credits.
The press conference with the never-compromise, anti-Health Care Republicans comes as Johnson’s strategy was dinged over the weekend. As The New York Times reported, Donald Trump and Congressional Republicans have been “thrust” onto “the defensive on health care.” Keeping the House on vacation for more than a month, Mike Johnson has gone from calling health care an “extraneous” issue, to falsifying the Democratic position, to calling Republicans the party of health care, to openly advocating for repeal of the Affordable Care Act. Meanwhile, The Wall Street Journal also highlighted the political pickle Republicans have put themselves in, calling it a “galling predicament for many Republicans, who must reckon with the fact that a growing number of their own voters have come to depend” on the Affordable Care Act for their health insurance.
