Despite New Yorkers’ right to abortion being protected under state law, Mike Lawler just rubberstamped a last minute provision buried in the GOP Tax Scam that would block Affordable Care Act (ACA) funds from going to any state health plans that cover abortion services — forcing states like New York to choose between protecting access to abortion or putting millions at risk of losing their health care.
When asked about the provision, even Lawler didn’t quite know how to defend his vote, falsely claiming it “has to do with Hyde.” As NOTUS points out, the provision IS NOT related to the Hyde Amendment at all.
Lawler’s secret provision advances a backdoor effort to pressure states with established legal protections into gradually stripping away abortion rights. It’s part of a larger effort by anti-choice Republicans like Lawler to chip away at abortion access nationwide — piece by piece, bill by bill.
Reminder: Mike Lawler “considers himself ‘pro-life’”, “believes that the right to abortion should be reserved to a tiny subset of American women”, has “been visible in the anti-abortion community”, and voted to jail doctors and nurses who provide reproductive health care.
DCCC Spokesperson Riya Vashi:
“Mike Lawler isn’t fooling anyone. His lengthy record of anti-choice extremism speaks for itself, and this is yet another backdoor scheme to rip away reproductive health care from millions of New Yorkers. Hudson Valley voters will remember his phony promises come 2026.”
