Mike Lawler and his extreme Republican compatriots are scrambling to save face following the Alabama Supreme Court decision to ban IVF by putting forth a resolution without “any legislative power” to protect reproductive freedoms.
Lawler’s empty support for IVF is a desperate attempt to cover up his dangerous record of restricting reproductive freedoms:
Lawler supported the overturning of Roe v. Wade, which led to the decision in Alabama restricting IVF access.
Lawler has voted for draconian anti-abortion legislation in Congress multiple times, including restricting reproductive care nationally for servicemembers and their families.
Lawler lied about abortion restrictions at an in-district event, denying that there are states which lack abortion exceptions for rape or incest – asking attendees to “show [him] the law.”
Lawler’s spokesperson also blamed abortion rights advocates for trying to “distract voters.”
And of course, Lawler supported extremist Speaker Mike Johnson – who has co-sponsored a national abortion ban with no exceptions for rape, incest, or to save a woman’s life that would also in practice prohibit IVF and common forms of birth control, and has pushed for 10 years of hard labor from doctors for providing abortion care.
Now, rather than signing onto a bill that *actually* protects IVF nationwide, Lawler is putting on a show to gain a few political points.
DCCC Spokesperson Ellie Dougherty:
“Mike Lawler is bending over backwards to mislead voters on his deliberate and extreme anti-choice record. It couldn’t be more clear that Lawler wants politicians to decide if, how, and when Lower Hudson Valley women should start a family.”
