Mike Lawler Worked to Elect “The Person Responsible for the Ending” of Roe v. Wade

LoHud: “A Republican political strategist by trade, Lawler was executive director of the New York State Republican Committee in the early 2010s and has worked for the Trump political operation.”

This morning, four-time indicted former president Donald Trump bragged about overturning Roe v. Wade and allowing states to implement draconian abortion bans.

The news coincided with a new report from LoHud exposing New York Republican Mike Lawler’s history of working to elect “the person responsible for the ending” Roe v. Wade in both 2016 and 2020:

“Lawler, 38, the highest-ranking elected official in the new generation of Hudson Valley Republicans, was a Republican National Convention delegate for Trump in 2016.

“A Republican political strategist by trade, Lawler was executive director of the New York State Republican Committee in the early 2010s and has worked for the Trump political operation. He was a principal in the consulting company, Checkmate Strategies, when it landed a $4 million direct-mail deal from a Trump-aligned political action committee to attack Joe Biden in the 2020 campaign cycle.”

Just like Trump, Lawler boasts a dangerous record of restricting reproductive freedoms:

  • Lawler supported the overturning of Roe v. Wade, which led to sweeping abortion bans without exceptions at the state level.

  • Lawler has voted for draconian anti-abortion legislation in Congress multiple times, including restricting reproductive care nationally for servicemembers and their families.

  • Lawler lied about abortion restrictions at an in-district event, denying that there are states which lack abortion exceptions for rape or incest – asking attendees to “show [him] the law.

  • Lawler’s spokesperson also blamed abortion rights advocates for trying to “distract voters.

  • And of course, Lawler supported extremist Speaker Mike Johnson – who has co-sponsored a national abortion ban with no exceptions for rape, incest, or to save a woman’s life that would also in practice prohibit IVF and common forms of birth control, and has pushed for 10 years of hard labor from doctors for providing abortion care.

DCCC Spokesperson Ellie Dougherty:
“Mike Lawler can’t erase his robust history of working – not once but twice – to elect Donald Trump, who brags about ending Roe v. Wade. Just like he did in 2016 and 2020, Lawler is propping up Trump’s dangerous efforts to restrict abortion rights nationwide.”
