This week, Mike Lawler faced scrutiny for “questioning a Latino official’s immigration status during a meeting” in Westchester County that “showed a shocking lack of concern for the unfair burden placed on people, particularly Black and other people of color.”
This isn’t the first time the vulnerable New York Republican has been exposed for a gross pattern of racial insensitivity.
In October of last year, The New York Times exposed Mike Lawler for wearing “blackface as part of a Halloween costume.” Lawler went on to offensively defend the blackface as “the sincerest form of flattery.”
Just days later, Lawler “declined” to attend the Rockland County NAACP’s multiple candidate forums – underscoring once again his disturbing pattern of insensitivity to the district’s Black community. The Spring Valley, Nyack, and Mid-Hudson/Westchester branches of the NAACP condemned Lawler’s use of blackface.
Politico also revealed that Lawler twice refused to condemn racist slurs and language at events and interviews leading up to Election Day – underscoring that he’s repeatedly allowed dangerous and hateful rhetoric to go unchecked.
DCCC Spokesperson Ellie Dougherty:
“Despite facing scrutiny on multiple occasions, Mike Lawler remains unfazed by his gross behavior. New York’s Seventeenth Congressional District deserves better.”
