COVID-19 cases are rising at a record rate across Iowa, forcing several schools to close — but Mariannette Miller-Meeks doesn’t appear to be concerned about public safety. Instead of leading by example, Miller-Meeks spent the week posting photo after photo of herself hobnobbing with people at local Republican events, failing to adhere to social distancing guidelines or wear a mask.
This isn’t the first time Miller-Meeks has put politics ahead of the health and safety of Iowans during this pandemic. In June, she took to the Senate floor to scoff at one of her colleagues who called her out for not wearing a mask. After taking more than twenty thousand dollars from lobbyists and special interests tied to the nursing home industry, Miller-Meeks voted to let nursing homes and long term care facilities off the hook if their negligence allowed seniors to get sick with COVID-19. And when Washington Republicans pushed an unproven drug to treat coronavirus cases earlier this year, Miller-Meeks abandoned her Hippocratic Oath and did the same, irresponsibly promoting a drug connected to increased mortality rates among coronavirus patients that has led to shortages of the drug in Iowa for those who rely on it for other diseases.
“If the spread of this virus isn’t contained, Iowa students can’t safely go back to school and businesses can’t get back on their feet. Instead of doing her part to look out for her friends and neighbors, Mariannette Miller-Meeks is irresponsibly hobnobbing at partisan, political events, making it more difficult to stop the spread. If Miller-Meeks won’t put people’s health and safety ahead of politics during a pandemic, how can Iowans expect her to be an independent leader in Washington?” asked DCCC Spokesperson Brooke Goren.
