Katy Tur, MSNBC: “Mariannette Miller-Meeks, who won her southeastern [Iowa] seat by just 799 votes. And by the sound of those Iowans, 2026 could be just as difficult, if not more so for Miller-Meeks. Folks are angry about tariffs, about high inflation and rising costs, and about rural hospitals and health care, health care.”
On key takeaways of Iowans’ frustrations with Miller-Meeks:
Tom Barton, The Gazette: “It was tense from the start, booing, heckling, walkouts, even a few people escorted out. You had voters in southeast Iowa venting months of frustration, not just with Washington gridlock, but with what they see as a lack of accessibility from their member of Congress… when people finally got their chance, they let her have it.”
Barton: “They said tariffs are hurting them, not helping. Rural families are worried about hospitals closing under Medicaid cuts.”Barton: “These weren’t partisan activists who were flown in. They were local farmers, retirees, working parents, and what came through loud and clear was again, anxiety about affordability and frustration that Washington’s fights aren’t fixing it.”
Katy Tur: “I know that’s been hitting Iowa hard, especially because the tariffs are eating into – so far, eating into soybeans, and the like. China isn’t buying them, they’ve really been feeling it.”
On what answers Iowans are looking from from Miller-Meeks on her votes to gut Medicaid:
Barton: “So, they’re looking for answers about, what are you going to do to ensure that rural hospitals that have…tight margins and are facing concerns about the impacts from these Medicaid cuts? What are you going to do to make sure that, you know, those hospitals can stay open, that they won’t have to close maternity wards or, you know, shut down specialized units?
Barton: “That you’re doing something to make sure that I can maintain my access to health care, and provide assurances that, you know, that’s not going to go away, and that there won’t be an impact to providers. And that my family can still access the same level and affordability of health insurance coverage through the individual marketplace.”
