In case you missed it, Peter Meijer unanimously lost the endorsement of Muskegon County Republicans to his Trump-backed challenger John Gibbs. Meijer’s loss of support from grassroots Republicans is just the latest reminder of the nasty GOP primary challenge he’s facing.
Meijer has previously been booed at the Kent County GOP Convention, and polling shows a “concerning picture for Meijer’s primary prospects” as 62 percent of likely Republican primary voters say they would back another candidate over him. Local county Republican chairs agree – with the former chair of the Ottawa County GOP Rett DeBoer saying Meijer would struggle to win over voters and Muskegon County GOP Chair Zach Lahring saying he expected Meijer to lose his primary given the “momentum behind Gibbs.”
Meanwhile, Trump-endorsed Gibbs continues to cozy up to the former president, fundraising with him at Mar-a-Lago, appearing at his rally, and touting his re-endorsement last week.
“With less than a month until his primary, Peter Meijer has no base of support and is weaker than ever against his Trump-backed primary challenger John Gibbs,” said DCCC spokesperson Elena Kuhn. “While West Michigan Republicans battle it out in a nasty race to the bottom, one thing is clear – regardless of who clears this primary, Hillary Scholten is well positioned to flip this seat blue.”
