National Journal: “Republicans Sweat Extreme Candidates”

Nationwide, ultra-MAGA extremists are winning primaries and threatening incumbents, and the national Republican establishment is panicking.

After a tumultuous primary in Ohio’s 9th congressional district, radical QAnon believer J.R. Majewski defeated the rest of the field and was met by crickets from the NRCC. After days of pressure, the NRCC gave a half-hearted statement that didn’t even mention Majewski’s name to a right-wing outlet in a desperate Friday news dump.

Now, National Journal reports “Republicans are sounding the alarm on other candidates who could be general election liabilities” – like accused domestic abuser Sandy Smith in NC-01, who’s forcing Kevin McCarthy’s super PAC to spend money against her in the crowded Republican primary to keep this seat from slipping totally out of reach.

DCCC Spokesperson Helen Kalla:
“Well, well, well – if it isn’t the consequences of the GOP’s actions. After letting extremism run amok in their party, Washington Republicans are panicking as they face the daunting task of trying to drag unelectable candidates over the finish line in November.”
