Nearly a Week Before Primaries, Young Kim Makes Last Ditch Effort to Stay on the Ballot Past June

While Orange County families look forward to some rest over the long weekend, Congresswoman Young Kim will remain busy as she desperately attempts to defend her incumbency against a primary from the right.

After doing little to campaign and make the case to the 80% of new voters in her district over the last few months, Kim finally realized she was in hot water. This week, with only a few days before the primary, Young Kim started pouring money into campaign ads in a panicked game of catch-up. Kim’s last ditch effort may not be enough to stave off the damage of her negligence. Today, Cook Political shifted CA-40’s rating from ‘likely R’ to a more competitive ‘lean R.’

In an environment where GOP primary voters have been selecting the most extreme candidates to run in general elections, Kim’s primary opponent Greg Raths is a formidable foe. The Trump-aligned Raths is well known in the district after multiple congressional runs. The situation is looking so bleak for Kim that Kevin McCarthy’s super PAC has waded in – buying $658,000 in ads to bolster the embattled incumbent.

“Despite moving to a district where some 80% of residents are new, Republican incumbent Young Kim did not care enough to communicate with voters. Now, nearly a week before her primary, she is desperately trying to make up for lost time as her Republican primary opponent Greg Raths seems poised to knock her off the ballot.
