A new poll, commissioned by the DCCC in California’s 45th Congressional District, shows Derek Tran leading vulnerable GOP incumbent Michelle Steel 48% to 45%. This marks the 3rd public poll with Tran leading Steel since early September, proving Tran’s strong momentum in the closing weeks.
Despite being outspent by anti-abortion extremist Steel and her far-right allies in the weeks leading up to this poll, Tran maintains a 3-point advantage overall and “leads with Asian Americans and Latinos” – including a 23-point advantage among AAPI voters and a 5-point lead among Latinos. “Steel’s favorability is underwater,” with a -2 net favorability, while Tran maintains a +7 net favorability.
Recent reporting also highlights Michelle Steel being called out for bigotry and red-baiting tactics.
DCCC Spokesperson Dan Gottlieb:
“Derek Tran – Army veteran, consumer rights attorney, and son of Vietnamese refugees – is shoring up support from diverse communities because he has a common-sense, bipartisan approach that will get things done for Orange County. In sharp contrast, this polling reaffirms that voters are seeing Michelle Steel for exactly who she is: a self-serving politician more interested in supporting extreme anti-abortion legislation than delivering for her constituents.”
