New DCCC Poll shows Don Coover within Striking Distance of Derek Schmidt in a Trump +20 district

Republicans are on defense in Kansas.

A new internal DCCC Analytics poll, first reported by Semafor, shows Democrat Don Coover trailing Derek Schmidt by just 3 points, 46% to 49%, in a district Donald Trump carried by 20 points in 2024. Republicans know Derek Schmidt is in trouble. Last week they flew in Donald Trump to rally for him, and today they’re sending JD Vance to Topeka to try to save him.

DCCC Spokesperson Nebeyatt Betre:
“Derek Schmidt has spent two years rubber-stamping Trump’s agenda and protecting predators while tariffs crush Kansas farmers and families pay more for everything. Don Coover, a West Point graduate, Army veteran, veterinarian, and southeast Kansas rancher, is running to bring costs down for Kansans. Voters are done with Schmidt, and they’re ready to send Don Coover to Congress.”

Key Finding from the Poll:

  • Trump is underwater by 11 points in a seat he won by 20 points in 2024.
  • Voters like Don Coover, who has a +11 favorability rating.
  • Democrats are competitive up and down the ballot. Adam Hamilton leads Roger Marshall 47–45 in the Senate race, and Cindy Holscher leads Ty Masterson 48–47 for governor.
  • Laura Kelly remains popular. The outgoing governor has a +9 job approval (47/38) in a district she carried twice, including against Derek Schmidt himself in 2022.
