NEW DCCC TV AD: “Clips”

Katko hitched his wagon to Trump after praising him for “straight talk”, “good principles”

The DCCC has begun airing a new ad “Clips” in New York’s 24th Congressional District highlighting how Congressman John Katko hitched his wagon to Trump.

Last year, after Trump had already disparaged POWs, called for an unconstitutional  religious test on immigrants, and attacked women, Katko described Trump’s reckless rhetoric as ”straight talk.”

In an interview after Trump had established a clear path to the Republican party’s nomination, Katko said that Trump had “a lot of good principles.”

And when asked in the same interview whether he would support Trump as his party’s nominee, Katko said, “whoever the Republican nominee is, I will absolutely support.”

“Despite disparaging war heroes and denigrating women, Congressman John Katko hitched up with Donald Trump,” said Bryan Lesswing at the DCCC. “Katko clearly put politics first when he jumped on the Trump bandwagon, and left Central New York far behind.

Narrator:  Congressman John Katko hitched up with Donald Trump …

Katko: “Whoever the Republican nominee is I’m going to support.”

May 3, 2016: “But, Nevertheless, Whoever The Republican Nominee Is, I Absolutely Will Support.” In a “Newsmaker” interview posted on Localsyr.com, Katko said he would “absolutely” support the Republican nominee. HOST: Mr. Cox, the chairman of the state Republican Party…got on board with Donald Trump. … You’re not ready to support any of the three, or anyone else for that matter? KATKO: No, I’m not. Endorsement. Support is a different thing. I mean, whoever the Republican nominee is, I’m going to support. HOST: Whoever it is? KATKO: Whoever it is. But, I’m going to maintain my independent streak like I’ve done since I’ve been in Congress. Whether or not it is a Republican or Democrat, I’m going to point out the differences I’m going to have with the presidential candidates whether they are big or small. But, nevertheless, whoever the Republican nominee is, I absolutely will support. [WSYR-TV, 2:08, 5/03/16] See Exhibit #1

May 3, 2016: Praised Donald Trump And Said, “And I Think He [Trump] Has A Lot Of Good Principles.” In a “Newsmaker” interview posted on Localsyr.com, Katko said Donald Trump had a lot of good principles.  HOST: Not to draw, you’re not ready to be drawn out today, but can you see running with Donald Trump at the top of the ticket? Many Republicans would run in the other direction and already have. KATKO: You can’t run in the other direction. If he’s on the ticket, he’s on the ticket. And we’re going to work with what we have. And I think he has a lot of good principles. He’s tapping into something in this country that a lot of people feel disenfranchised, that the professional politicians is not serving them well. … Problem is, can he deliver that message without offending people, and we have to deal with it going forward. May 4, 2016: Trump Became The Republican Party’s Presumptive Presidential Nominee. “Donald Trump is the presumptive Republican presidential nominee following a decisive victory in the Indiana primary and the decision by Ted Cruz to drop out of the race. Though Trump has not formally secured the 1,237 delegates he needs to win the nomination — and likely won’t until June — there is no serious opposition left to block his path. His victory amounts to a stunning takeover of the Republican Party by a candidate with no political experience. Along the way, he eviscerated the GOP’s most accomplished presidential field in a generation and captured the Zeitgeist of a party in which grass roots voters harbor deep ill will toward establishment elites.” [CNN, 5/04/16] See Article #1

Narrator: Despite — Trump on women:

Trump: “Does she have a good body? No. Does she have a fat a**? Absolutely.”

Narrator: women’s health

Trump Clip: “I would absolutely defund.”

Trump: “I Would Absolutely Defund” Planned Parenthood. “Trump, when asked about his view Planned Parenthood, said, [relevant remarks begin around 4:00] ‘I’m totally against as long as they have abortion. You know, if it’s an abortion clinic in any way, shape, or form, I’m against. As you know, I’m pro-life. And I’m just against it i’m [sic] against it. Now, with that being said, if that can be separated out, and I mean literally, I would not give as long as they’re doing abortions. They do work — they do other work which is very helpful in terms of women’s health issues, and that’s good stuff. The problem is, I will not be able, at all to get over the issue of Planned Parenthood as long as they’re providing abortions, and that’s what they’re doing, and doing it pretty readily, and it’s not good. So, I would absolutely defund. They have to get over that issue, that’s a big problem.’” [Breitbart, 8/12/15; Fox Business Network, 4:00, 8/12/15] See Article #4 and Exhibit #3
