NEW EDITORIAL: “Tom Kean Jr.’s Phony Claims on IVF”

Sue Altman: “It seems to me like every time there’s an election year, he’s ‘pro-choice,’ and then he completely flip-flops when he’s actually serving the people of this district.”

The NJ Star-Ledger Editorial Board is hitting Tom Kean Jr. this week for his abysmal record on reproductive freedom and IVF — calling Kean’s campaign one of “hiding and deception” filled with “glaring hypocrisy.” Here are some highlights:

“Republicans running for Congress in swing districts, like Tom Kean Jr., are in a real bind over in vitro fertilization.”

Kean has tried to make himself “more palatable by claiming that they personally support IVF – but it doesn’t matter a bit, because they’re doing nothing to actually protect the right to IVF treatment.”

“The last time Kean ran for Congress, he tried to weasel his way around the issue of abortion, calling himself “pro-choice” in public while at the same time burnishing his pro-life credentials on a secret website sent to conservative voters.”

“Now we’re seeing yet another campaign focused on hiding and deception, this time over IVF treatment.”

“Perhaps this is not so much about defending the “sanctity of life” as it is about punishing women for their behavior and forcing them to carry unwanted pregnancies to term.”

“When Kean tells us one thing while his record says the opposite, why should we trust him to stand up to the extremists?”

DCCC Spokesperson Aidan Johnson:
“Tom Kean Jr. always falls in line with his fellow anti-abortion extremists, and he’s turning to outright lies and two-faced trickery to bury his abysmal record on reproductive rights. Kean’s failures continue to pile up, and his attacks on women’s fundamental freedoms have not gone unnoticed with New Jersey families.”
