NEW: Mariannette Miller-Meeks Runs Away During Vote Protecting Women’s Health Care [NOTUS]

Neither [Miller-Meeks or Evans] was in the room during the hour-and-a-half-long debate and did not vote on the amendment — even though they had been present and voting during the rest of the hearing.

New reporting from NOTUS reveals that despite being “present and voting during the rest of the [Energy & Commerce Committee] hearing,” Mariannette Miller-Meeks skipped out on an amendment vote that would have removed language from Republicans’ extreme budget proposal defunding Planned Parenthood and jeopardizing women’s access to health care.

Playing hooky during markup votes is just the latest attempt by Miller-Meeks to run away from her extreme anti-abortion record – whether it’s co-sponsoring a national abortion ban with no exceptions, voting to eliminate the right to an abortion entirely in Iowa, or supporting a bill that would threaten access to abortion, IVF, and contraception.

DCCC Spokesperson Katie Smith:
“Mariannette Miller-Meeks laced up her sneakers and ran away from a vote to protect reproductive rights because she cares more about her extreme anti-abortion agenda than Iowa women. Miller-Meeks is, quite literally, nowhere to be found when it comes to standing up for Iowans’ rights.”

In case you missed it…

NOTUS: A Measure to Defund Planned Parenthood Will Stay in the Reconciliation Bill

  • Republicans on a key House panel shot down a measure that would have taken language to “defund” Planned Parenthood out of the reconciliation bill, but the two most politically vulnerable GOP members on the committee missed the vote entirely.
  • During the marathon markup in the Energy and Commerce Committee […] Nearly all committee Republicans voted against an amendment brought by Rep. Lizzie Fletcher to strike a measure in the bill that would prohibit Planned Parenthood from receiving federal funds, even through Medicaid payments.
  • During the 2024 campaign, Reps. Mariannette Miller-Meeks and Gabe Evans — like other Republicans at the time — avoided speaking about their stances on abortion. Neither lawmaker was in the room during the hour-and-a-half-long debate and did not vote on the amendment — even though they had been present and voting during the rest of the hearing.
  • Miller-Meeks downplayed her past support for a near-total federal abortion ban…
  • The offices of Miller-Meeks and Evans did not respond to NOTUS’ requests for comments as to why they missed this portion of the markup.
