After two years, Young hasn’t broken through with voters; Trump support hurts his reelection chances
Three weeks from Election Day, combat veteran Jim Mowrer and Congressman David Young are in a statistical dead heat in the race for Iowa’s 3rd District, according to a new poll released today.
Mowrer currently sits just three points behind Young at 46 to 49 percent, well within the margin of error. Congressman Young is also under 50 percent, a precarious place for a sitting Member of Congress a mere 3 weeks from Election Day.
After having two years and two campaigns to make his case to Third District voters, David Young hasn’t broken through: only 41 percent of voters like him, and nearly as many (39 percent) don’t.
What’s more, Young’s longtime backing of alleged serial sexual predator Donald Trump is a huge problem: Trump is trailing Clinton by 11 points in a four-way trial heat for Congress, and 62% of Iowans rate him negatively.
In light of Trump’s toxicity in the district, it’s troubling for Young that 70% of those polled believe that he “will work with Donald Trump to help him pass his agenda,” up from 58% at the end of September.
“Congressman Young has long put party before country, having lacked the moral courage to denounce Trump’s candidacy after he attacked a Gold Star family, called Mexicans rapists and murders, vowed to ban an entire religion from entering America, and now bragged about sexual assault,” said DCCC Spokesman Tyler Law. “There’s no question that Young’s blind allegiance to Trump is having an impact on this election, and combat veteran Jim Mowrer will prevail in November.”
