63% of registered voters say they’re “less likely” to vote for a candidate who cut Medicaid

Gabe Evans’ full-throated support for gutting Coloradans’ health care to pay for tax cuts for billionaires is widely unpopular, new polling shows.

KEY FINDINGS AMONG REGISTERED VOTERS IN CO-08:

  • 63% say they’re “less likely to vote for a candidate who voted to cut Medicaid.” [YIKES! ICYMI – 9 News: Colorado Rep. Gabe Evans votes to advance budget plan cutting Medicaid
  • Majority have a “favorable” opinion of Medicaid, with 72% saying it’s “very” or “somewhat important” for the community.
  • 77% have seen, read, or heard “a lot” or “some information” about Evans’ plans to gut Medicaid.
  • Evans’ favorables: 42% unfavorable, 40% favorable.

  • “Politicians are saying that they want to cut Medicaid to make it better, but the poll shows clearly that voters aren’t buying what they’re selling,” said Jake Williams, CEO of Healthier Colorado. “It shows that there’s real political peril for any candidate who votes to cut Medicaid.”
  • “The poll shows that Medicaid cuts would have devastating effects for both our health and economy here in Colorado,” Williams said. “I also think it shows that Colorado voters aren’t dummies.”

Colorado Politics: Colorado residents express concerns over proposed Medicaid, SNAP cuts, new survey reveals

  • Evans, a former state lawmaker and vocal Trump supporter, voted in favor of the budget both in committee and on the House floor.
  • About one-third of CD8 residents are covered by Medicaid, according to the Colorado Department of Health Care Policy and Financing (HCPF).
  • In CD8, his approval rating was 40%, with an additional 42% saying they had an unfavorable opinion of him.
  • In CD8, 57% of respondents said they had a hard time [affording] health care.
  • The majority of respondents both statewide and in CD8 had positive opinions of Medicaid.
  • The majority of respondents, 65% statewide and 63% in CD8, said they would not vote for a candidate who voted to cut Medicaid funding. 
  • Over 80% of respondents both statewide and in CD8 said they supported the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP.
