NEW POLLING: Ahead of the State of the Union, Most Americans Feel the Country is Worse Off Under Republicans

6-in-10 Americans disapprove of Trump’s job performance

Ahead of the State of the Union, Trump and House Republicans are facing strong disapproval from the American public. A new Washington Post-ABC News-Ipsos poll shows that 60% of Americans disapprove of the president’s handling of his role, with 47% indicating strong disapproval. Notably, 69% of Independents—a key voting block—significantly disapprove of the administration.

Across the board, Americans are deeply unhappy with key issues:

  • 65% disapprove of inflation
  • 64% disapprove of tariffs
  • 57% disapprove of the economy
  • 58% disapprove of Trump’s immigration policies

Even though 56% of Americans say tariffs hurt the U.S. economy, the president has doubled down on his reckless trade war. Overall, Americans feel that the country is worse off than a year ago—57% of voters say, “the state of the union is not strong.”

REMINDER: Republicans failed to do their job and stand up to Trump when he enforced illegal tariffs that drove up prices. Now, cowardly House Republicans are trying to backtrack and don’t want to take accountability for making life more expensive for hardworking families.

DCCC spokesperson Bridget Gonzalez:
“House Republicans and Trump are responsible for making life unaffordable and difficult for everyday families. Hardworking Americans are tired of the failed Republican economic agenda and they will ensure that Democrats take back the House in November.”
