A new DCCC-commissioned poll of Maryland voters shows broad support for redistricting as a necessary counter to red-state Republicans’ rigging congressional maps on behalf of Donald Trump.
Marylanders are clear: they won’t stand for Trump and Republicans’ attempts to rig the 2026 election and believe that Maryland legislators must help level the playing field nationally and provide a check on Trump. Only 1 in 3 Marylanders oppose redistricting in their state and Democrats overwhelmingly indicated that they would support primary candidates that support this fight.
KEY FINDINGS AMONG LIKELY 2026 MARYLAND VOTERS:
Voters support redistricting because it provides a check on Trump and GOP gerrymandering: A message that Republicans in Texas and Missouri are bullying the country by redrawing maps, and that Maryland should respond by redrawing its own, drew positive reactions from 85% of Democrats, 65% of independents, and 23% of Republicans.
Opposition to redistricting is low statewide: Only 33% of likely Maryland voters oppose redistricting — well below opposition measured in Indiana (52%) and Missouri (44%).
Independents are especially open to redistricting in the state: Just 28% of Maryland independents oppose redistricting, compared to 57% of independents in Missouri.
Democratic primary voters want pro-redistricting candidates: In an initial question, 52% of registered Democrats were more likely to support a candidate who backs a redrawn map, versus 18% who would be more likely to vote for someone who opposes it. After hearing both sides, support climbed to 69%, while just 14% were more likely to back an anti-redistricting candidate.
