But in Congress, he’s done the opposite and made care more expensive.
Begich voted to cut $1 trillion from Medicaid to pay for tax breaks for the wealthy. As a result, “nearly 36,000 Alaskans are expected to lose health insurance altogether…” and Alaskan “hospitals will lose $63 million in funding,” threatening services and potential closures. Despite these impacts, Begich celebrated the bill’s passage.
To make matters worse, Begich also opposed a bipartisan plan to extend Affordable Care Act tax credits, keeping health care costs soaring for “more than 25,000 Alaskans.” Some families have already seen “their insurance premiums spike by 346%… an average increase of $909 a year.”
One Alaskan put it simply: “I need my government, specifically my congressional delegation, to speak for me…I feel absolutely abandoned.”
DCCC Spokesperson Anna Elsasser:
“Nick Begich campaigned on lowering health care costs, but as soon as he got to Washington he broke that promise to Alaskans. He has put himself and wealthy special interests ahead of the people he represents. In a state already facing some of the highest health care costs in the country, Begich’s record is disqualifying.”
