In a new report from the Times of San Diego, CA-49 Republican congressional candidate Brian Maryott is in hot water after allegedly hiding over 30 unreported payments to campaign staff via the mobile app Venmo.
Maryott, who is the treasurer of his campaign committee, provided campaign staff with payments titled “reimbursements,” “expenses,” “week,” “month” and “per diem.” The payment amounts were not publicly disclosed and went unreported on Maryott’s federal disclosures, despite federal reporting requirements.
It seems Maryott’s shady practices have followed him from the private sector to his bid for Congress. While he was a Senior Vice President at Wells Fargo, the bank navigated multiple fraudulent sales charges and a $5.1 million dollar fine from the SEC for broker’s misconduct. Maryott’s financial misdealings should trouble the residents of California’s 49th district.
DCCC Spokesperson Maddy Mundy:
“Brian Maryott has run for Congress three times now – he knows federal law requires the disclosure of all campaign-related expenses. His attempt to instead hide campaign staff payments and skirt federal law reveals his contempt for the most basic standards of transparency and integrity.”
