After New Testimony Confirms Trump Abuse of Power, Will Washington Republicans Continue to Distract from the Truth?

Shocking new testimony confirms Trump held up military aid in an attempt to get dirt on his political rival — House GOP’s only response is stunts

On Tuesday, the top U.S. envoy to Ukraine gave testimony that was the clearest confirmation of the initial whistleblower complaint and its bombshell details of President Trump’s abuse of power. Thus far, House Republicans’ only response is a thinly veiled stunt to distract from their failure to stand up for the rule of law.

According to multiple media reports, Ukraine envoy Bill Taylor told Congress in no uncertain terms that President Trump personally held up military aid to Ukraine in an attempt to put himself above the law and squeeze a foreign power into investigating Trump’s political rival.

The diplomat, William Taylor, painted a damaging portrait of events that directly tied Trump to a quid pro quo with Ukraine, according to his prepared remarks obtained by POLITICO and his responses to questions as described by sources in the room for the closed-door testimony.

Taylor prompted sighs and gasps inside the secure hearing room when he read his lengthy, 15-page opening statement, two of the sources said.” [Politico, 10/22/19]

But instead of responding to the damning substance of Taylor’s testimony, Republicans in Washington are pulling stunts to try to distract from their inability to address the President’s abuse of power. This showcases the stark contrast between House Democrats and Republicans in Washington: while Democrats are committed to getting the facts, Republicans in Washington are committed to trying to distract from the total meltdown of their radioactive President’s defense.

DCCC spokesperson Cole Leiter issued the following statement:

“Every new piece of evidence shows President Trump put himself above the law when he personally held up military aid to Ukraine, and Republicans in Washington need to speak out against President Trump’s clear abuse of power instead of pulling stunts. Tuesday’s testimony from Bill Taylor confirmed that President Trump withheld military aid to try and squeeze a foreign power into investigating his political rival, and it’s time for Republicans to put country before party and uphold the rule of law.”
