NEW: Tucson Hospital Closing After Juan Ciscomani Voted to Gut Health Care Funding

Select Specialty Hospital – Tucson East to close in September, costing Ciscomani’s district 99 jobs and access to critical care

Roughly one year after Juan Ciscomani voted for the largest cuts to Medicaid in history, a Tucson-area hospital in his district announced it’s closing its doors.

REMINDER: Ciscomani blasted D.C. Republicans’ plan to gut Medicaid, arguing that the bill “jeopardizes the stability of our hospitals.” Despite his own warning, Ciscomani voted for the plan – without any changes – just days later.

Ciscomani’s Medicaid cuts are expected to cost Southern Arizona hospitals at least $110 million each year. The underfunded Rural Health Fund is not enough to cover Ciscomani’s cuts, especially with Arizona receiving the sixth lowest funding amount in the nation despite Ciscomani’s promise to be a “force at the table” to get Arizona its fair share.

At the same time local clinics are closing, Arizona has seen the third sharpest decline in ACA enrollment after Ciscomani voted against extending key tax credits that lower premiums. Prior to his “no” vote, Ciscomani said “doing nothing is not an option” because there would be “massive” consequences and “real harm” to Arizonans if the tax credits expired.

DCCC Spokesperson Lindsay Reilly:
“Juan Ciscomani is a flip-flopping fool who sold out Southern Arizonans’ health care to pay for tax cuts for billionaires. Voters will remember his betrayal at the ballot box this November.”
