Newt Gingrich: “If the election were in May, Republicans would lose”
The New York Times and Washington Post report that House Republicans are bracing for a midterm wipeout as voters are furious with the Trump administration and rising costs. With Trump’s favorability numbers falling to all-time lows, including a record 70% disapproval on the economy, House Republicans face the worst headwinds of any midterm since 2018, when they lost 40 seats.
The Post points out that “new polls showed voters prefer Democrats on the economy for the first time since 2010 and that Republicans disapprove of Trump’s handling of inflation.”
GOP strategists are even joking about a “‘spike in liquor sales to Republicans’ who are seeking to numb the political pain.”
With battleground expansions into historically red territory, Democrats are decidedly on offense ahead of the midterms. A longtime Trump pollster, John McLaughlin, noted that “Right now the Democrats have us on defense.”
Another strategist called out his party for its failure to live up to their 2024 campaign promises: “There’s a whole lot of voters who supported Republicans in ’24 with the expectation that we were going to fix the economy and curb inflation, and you don’t see that taking place right now.”
DCCC Spokesperson Liam Buckley: “House Republicans have been a rubber stamp on every single one of Donald Trump’s disastrous policies. It’s no wonder they’re bracing for catastrophic midterm losses — they have only themselves to blame.”
