Under the GOP Tax Scam, Alaskans will be forced to pay more in food aid costs
After his buddies on the House Agriculture Committee last night voted to slash funding for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), Begich offered his full throated support for their betrayal – calling the move “healthy” for Alaska.
This impacts nearly 30,000 Alaskan households who rely on the program – 37% of those include Alaska seniors and nearly half include children. The Republican bill would cut nearly $300 billion from the program nationwide.
In a state that already struggles from food assistance backlogs, high food insecurity, and especially high payment error rates, Republicans’ plan to offload food aid costs to the states will hit Alaska hardest – forcing families in need to foot hundreds of billions in costs.
DCCC Spokesperson Anna Elsasser:
“Nick Begich is more than happy to fall in line with extremist Republicans on the backs of Alaskan families, seniors, and children. The state’s already high food costs make SNAP an essential lifeline for Alaska’s rural communities – and they won’t forget how Begich sold them out to billionaires come 2026.”
