A new poll, commissioned by the DCCC in California’s 45th Congressional District, shows Derek Tran is in a dead heat with vulnerable two-term Congresswoman Michelle Steel at 47% each before any communication. Tran already has tremendous baseline support among Vietnamese voters in this majority-minority and heavily-AANHPI district at 62%.
After providing short, balanced profiles on both Tran and Steel, Tran secures the lead – garnering 50% of the vote to Steel’s 47%, and gaining even more ground among Vietnamese voters at 68%.

New data — one of the first publicly released House polls since Harris took over the top of the ticket — shows [Tran is] neck-and-neck with the incumbent.
-
Tran, an attorney and Army veteran, had already outraised the incumbent last quarter with an impressive $1.3 million haul. As the son of Vietnamese refugees, he’s received something close to celebrity status in a district that has the largest Vietnamese population outside of Vietnam itself.
-
Democrats are suddenly feeling a lot more optimistic about their chances of flipping the seat.
-
Steel is one of 16 GOP members in districts that Biden carried in 2020.
-
Another Democratic poll from mid-July, before Biden dropped out, showed Tran leading Steel 43 to 42 percent, according to a person familiar with the poll.
DCCC Spokesperson Dan Gottlieb:
“While Vietnamese-American veteran and consumer rights attorney Derek Tran is proving himself to be the common-sense, bipartisan leader Orange County needs, Michelle Steel has taken her voters for granted – working against their best interests in service of her own throughout her tenure in Congress. This polling confirms what we know to be true: Steel’s record – from self-service to anti-abortion extremism – is coming back to bite her”
