NRCC Backs Candidate Accused of Domestic Abuse, 2 Months After the Primary Election

After two months of ignoring her win, the NRCC shamefully backs Sandy Smith in NC-01 despite alleged pattern of domestic abuse

Today, the National Republican Campaign Committee (NRCC) officially backed Sandy Smith (NC-01) after two months of ignoring her candidacy.

The move from the national Republican group endorses and legitimizes Smith despite her alleged pattern of domestic abuse – including against her teenage daughter, who filed for a domestic violence protection order against her. Smith’s daughter said she “pushed and shoved me, she slapped me, pulled my hair, pulled me to the ground and sat on me […] She held me down by my hair and punched me in the face with a closed fist.”

Smith is also accused of domestic violence toward two former husbands, including allegedly trying to “bash” one husband’s “head in with the alarm clock,” and attempting to run over the other husband with a car.

The NRCC has proven today there is no floor to how low they will go to try and install extremist Republicans in office – even if those candidates have been accused of violence towards their family members.

“The allegations leveled against Sandy Smith are completely disqualifying, and the NRCC’s decision to back her shows just how far national Republicans are willing to go to install their extremist candidates in office,” said DCCC spokesperson Monica Robinson. “This district is a lost cause for them with MAGA extremist Sandy Smith as their Republican nominee and Don Davis will win in November.”
