The fourth quarter of 2017 was nothing short of humiliating for the NRCC’s Young Gun recruits. Ironically, NRCC Chairman Steve Stivers said just yesterday that he “felt pretty good” about what is actually the worst Republican recruitment in recent memory. To make matters worse, Republican incumbents are burning through their campaign funds at a shocking rate, decimating the cash on hand advantage that is expected of incumbents.
In contrast, 50 Democratic candidates out-raised 39 Republican incumbents in the fourth quarter while spending money responsibly to prepare for tough general election fights.
“It’s increasingly clear that the NRCC has completely failed to recruit strong candidates against Democratic incumbents and in open seats,” said DCCC Spokesman Tyler Law. “For the candidates that the NRCC has touted in their ‘Young Gun’ program, they have either completely failed to launch or fizzled out. Simply put, House Republicans’ offensive opportunities are non-existent – a bad sign for an already imperiled Republican majority.”
