So far, no word yet from Republican candidates Claudia Tenney, George Phillips or Steve Wells on whether they would endorse Trump as nominee
As New York’s presidential primary draws nearer next month, Republican presidential frontrunner Donald Trump has put New York House Republican incumbents between a rock and hard place.
Meanwhile, New York House Republican challengers have been fairly silent on whether or not they would support their home state frontrunner, Donald Trump.
In New York’s 22nd congressional district, Republican congressional challengers Claudia Tenney, George Phillips and Steve Wells have been mum on whether any of them is a fan of Trump, and whether they would even support Trump as the party’s standard bearer.
During an interview with WUTQ’s “Talk of the Town” recently, Tenney was asked for her thoughts on the potential of a Trump presidency, responding, “Well, we’ll have to wait and see. It’ll be interesting.” (18:14)
In a follow-up question about potential running mates for Trump, Tenney offered some thoughts on the frontrunner, saying, “If it is Trump, I think he is the least knowledgeable about legal issues in government, the constitution. He should choose someone – if it’s going to be Trump – that has that kind of strong base in that area…” (19:40).
“With New York’s presidential primary right around the corner, where do Upstate Republican congressional candidates Claudia Tenney, George Phillips and Steve Wells stand on Donald Trump?” asked Bryan Lesswing at the DCCC. “Upstate New York voters deserve to know whether Tenney, Phillips and Wells currently support Trump and whether they would support Trump as their party’s standard bearer.”
