Ohio Republicans Complicit in GOP’s Crusade to End Access to Legal Abortion in America

Access to safe, legal abortion in America took a devastating blow last night with POLITICO reporting on a leaked draft Supreme Court majority opinion that would strike down Roe v. Wade and open the door for 26 states to immediately move to ban the right to abortion. Ohio Republicans are complicit in this all-out assault on women’s freedoms.

Ohioans need to know the Republican congressional candidates’ dangerous record on women’s reproductive freedom and health care:

• OH-01: Steve Chabot has an extensive anti-choice record that includes signing an amicus brief in support of overturning Roe v. Wade, and voted against the Women’s Health Protection Act. Chabot was also endorsed by extreme anti-choice organizations.

• OH-09: Craig Riedel called Roe v. Wade a “terrible decision,” and said his “proudest day as State Rep” was voting for an extreme six-week abortion ban. Theresa Gavarone was endorsed by a slew of extreme anti-choice organizations, and boasted about her efforts to pass an extreme six-week abortion ban. JR Majewski said he would be “an unapologetic” anti-choice member of congress, and vowed to end tax-payer funding of Planned Parenthood.

• OH-13: Madison Gesiotto Gilbert said that a leaked report about Roe v. Wade’s imminent demise was “Amazing, just amazing news!!!” Gilbert also supported previous attempts in Ohio to pass an extreme six-week abortion ban.

Make no mistake – access to abortion is on the line this November and hinges on control of Congress. Just hours before the draft Supreme Court opinion was leaked, the Washington Post reported that congressional Republicans are working on a “push for a strict nationwide ban on the procedure if Republicans retake power in Washington.”
