On Social Security’s 89th Birthday, House Republicans Want To Take Away Our Abuelitos’ Hard Earned Benefits

Feliz cumpleaños to Social Security, which was created 89 years ago to provide financial security for millions of older Americans across the country. But House Republicans are trying to cut a crucial benefit for hardworking Latinos. Around 45 percent of Latinos rely on Social Security for 90 percent or more of their income, while about 38 percent rely on it for all of their income.

House Republicans have endorsed $1.5 trillion in cuts to Social Security, including raising the retirement age and cutting disability benefits. House Republicans on the Appropriations Committee have also voted to cut nearly half a billion dollars from the Social Security Administration, which would close field offices, extend wait times, and delay disability claims nationwide.

Meanwhile, 80% of voters oppose plans to cut Social Security benefits by raising the retirement age, and 81% oppose any cuts to retirement programs. And a majority of Latinos also believe that the government should make sure Americans can enjoy a decent life – exactly what Social Security was created to do.

DCCC Spokesperson José Muñoz:
“Attempts by House Republicans to cut Social Security and take away our abuelitos‘ hard earned benefits is especially harmful to the millions of Latinos who rely on this. Only House Democrats are fighting to protect Social Security.”
