| On this day 62 years ago, America’s nutrition assistance program was signed into law, helping generations of New Mexico families and children afford healthy, nutritious meals. Today, Greg Cunningham has pledged his unwavering support to dismantling that program.
In the year since House Republicans voted to cut $187 billion from SNAP with their Cunningham-backed Big, Ugly Bill, nearly 23,000 New Mexicans have already lost critical nutrition assistance, forcing them to decide between feeding their families or paying their bills.
New Mexico is home to the highest rate of SNAP recipients in the country. The Big, Ugly Bill slashed food access for more than 60,000 NM-02 households of working families, seniors, and children already struggling with rising grocery prices.
Yet, Cunningham has said passing Republicans’ reckless agenda is his “number one priority,” claimed policies like gutting health care and SNAP “are good for the people” of NM-02, and called New Mexicans losing the health care and food assistance they relied upon “enslaved.”
