ONE YEAR AGO TODAY: Bipartisan House Ethics Committee Unveils Investigation into Congressman David Schweikert

In an investigation that has cost him hundreds of thousands of dollars, Schweikert faces allegations that he misused taxpayer and campaign funds

As a reminder, it’s been exactly one year since the House Ethics Committee revealed its decision to investigate Congressman David Schweikert over potential illegal handling of taxpayer dollars and improper campaign contributions.

Schweikert’s problems intensified in December, when the committee expanded the scope of its investigation based on “substantial reason” to believe that Schweikert improperly billed campaign expenses to his taxpayer-funded congressional office – a revelation that directly contradicts Schweikert’s repeated claims that there is nothing to the allegations against him.

While public confidence in Schweikert’s ability to do his job erodes, legal fees from the growing investigation have put his re-election bid in serious financial jeopardy. As Politico reported at the end of last quarter, “Overall debt by Schweikert’s reelection committee amounted to more than $251,000, meaning Schweikert’s campaign owes more than it has on hand.”

“Congressman David Schweikert has spent the last year embroiled in ethics problems that are only getting worse,” said DCCC Spokesperson Brooke Goren. “With legal bills mounting, it’s hard to imagine how Schweikert finds enough time to do the job Arizonans elected him to do, let alone to gin up enough support to get re-elected.”
