| This week marks one year since House Republicans voted for the Big, Ugly Bill, a disastrous tax scam that enacted the largest cut to Medicaid and food assistance in American history to fund massive tax breaks for wealthy elites.
Greg Cunningham has supported the Republican health care crisis every step of the way – saying passing their agenda is his “number one priority” and that policies like taking health care and food away from families – “are good for the people” of NM-02, and “[he’d] like to help further those policies.”
The DCCC made clear that the Tax Scam would be the defining issue of the NM-02 race – and that fact remains the same one year later. Here is why:
- Nearly 100,000 New Mexicans will lose health coverage, with nearly 40,000 at risk in NM-02. Marketplace enrollment has fallen by 4.2 million people nationally, while an estimated 3.8 million Americans have lost Medicaid or CHIP coverage since the law took effect.
- The Cunningham-backed bill cut nearly $47 million in estimated Medicaid revenue from NM-02 hospitals.
- Two hospitals and clinics have closed or will close and 15 are at risk of closing in New Mexico.
- New Mexico has the highest SNAP participation rate in the country and the Big, Ugly Bill threatened food access for over 60,000 households in NM-02. Enrollment has fallen by nearly 4% in New Mexico, with more than 17,000 fewer people in the state receiving nutrition assistance.
- Health care costs are soaring. New Mexicans have been forced to pay 21.5% more for their monthly premiums in 2026 or abandon their plans altogether.
- The Big, Ugly Bill remains deeply unpopular. Recent Navigator polling shows the law underwater by 11 points in battleground districts and 18 points nationally, underscoring the political liability Cunningham will face.
DCCC Spokesperson Anna Elsasser:
“Greg Cunningham has proven he will be another reliable vote for the Republican health care crisis. As a result of Republicans’ shameful actions, hospitals are closing, children are losing food, and health care is being stripped away from tens of thousands of New Mexico families. GOP extremists like Cunningham are going to lose in November, and their unabashed cruelty is the reason why.” |
