OREGONIAN: Despite Endorsing Trump “Rep. Lori Chavez-DeRemer doesn’t want to talk about Donald Trump conviction”

Rather than rescind her support of Donald Trump after he was convicted on 34 felony counts, Lori Chavez-DeRemer has reacted with complete and utter radio silence.

Chavez-DeRemer’s blind loyalty to the first former U.S. President ever convicted of a felony is wildly out of step with Oregonians, and the choice to abandon her constituents will cost Chavez-DeRemer in November.

DCCC Spokesperson Dan Gottlieb:
“If shameless, self-serving Lori Chavez-DeRemer cared a single bit about ‘law and order’ in Oregon, she’d be condemning this 34-time convicted felon instead of endorsing him to be President of the United States. While Chavez-DeRemer is busy debating how to dodge basic questions or explain her support for the 34-time convicted felon in the room, Oregon voters are fed up with the games and ready for leaders who will actually put in the work to lower costs, protect their communities, and cut out all the partisan charades that their current member of Congress loves to indulge.”

  • The historic conviction of former President Donald Trump on 34 felony counts Thursday drew condemnation from Republicans who questioned the legitimacy of the legal process and elation from Democrats who said justice had been served.

  • U.S. Rep. Lori Chavez-DeRemer, however, didn’t want to talk about the conviction when asked to comment Thursday. Instead, she focused on the issues facing Oregonians – and didn’t once mention Trump.

  • “It’s disappointing that the national narrative continues overshadowing the kitchen table issues Oregon families are facing every day,” Chavez-DeRemer said in an emailed statement. “They are struggling with high prices, worried about rampant violent crime and drug use and want a secure border and commonsense immigration policies. Sensationalizing the presidential race doesn’t change the fact that Oregonians want relief from the failed policies of the extreme.”

  • Chavez-DeRemer’s response comes as she’s gearing up for a tough reelection bid this fall against Democratic state Rep. Janelle Bynum in the decidedly purple 5th Congressional District, which stretches from Lake Oswego across rural Marion and Clackamas counties and on to Bend. The winner of the fall election, expected to be among the most-watched races in the country, will almost certainly be decided by moderate unaffiliated voters.

  • In the wake of Thursday’s verdict, Bynum did not talk about the legal process either. Instead, she focused on Chavez-DeRemer’s endorsement of Trump earlier this year.

  • “The question that I have is, Lori Chavez-DeRemer gave Trump a full-throated endorsement, and now that he’s a 34-time convicted felon, my question is, ‘Is she going to stand by her man?’” Bynum said. “Is she going to stand by Oregonians or is she going to stand by her man? Is she going to stand up for the rule of law or stand by her man?”
