Mariannette Miller-Meeks told Iowa health care and cancer research advocates that one of the several rural health care clinics that closed down in the past year shut its doors due to “over saturation” of “primary care providers.”
The Gazette: “[Miller-Meeks] pushed back, however, on the MercyOne clinic closure in Ottumwa as an example of declining rural access, attributing it to an oversaturation of primary care providers and noting other providers remain.”
Iowa Capital Dispatch: “This [Ottumwa] closure, [Miller-Meeks] said, was due to an “over saturation” of primary care in the region.”
That’s right. Miller-Meeks says rural clinics are closing because there are… *checks notes* … too many health care options for rural Iowans.
Not only is Miller-Meeks lying – the MercyOne Ottumwa clinic shuttered its doors due to the historic cuts to Medicaid and rural health care funding she voted for – but she is completely out of touch with reality.
Iowa faces a rural health care provider *shortage* and multiple clinics have shuttered their doors or reduced services just in the past year thanks to Miller-Meeks slashing health care funding.
