It’s officially Donald Trump’s Republican Party. Look no further than Speaker Ryan’s Judiciary Committee Chairman’s decision yesterday to sign on to the anti-constitutional and racist measure to end birthright citizenship in America. It’s no wonder that Speaker Ryan has refused to use his authority to make sure millions of voters have critical protections needed under the Voting Rights Act reauthorization. The committee chairman responsible for moving voting rights protections is aligned with Donald Trump and Republican obstructionists who want to end birthright citizenship.
“We can’t expect reasonable movement on voting rights protections for millions of minorities when the Chairman responsible wants to end birthright citizenship for millions of Americans,” said Jermaine House of DCCC. “This is more evidence that Speaker Ryan and his leadership team have completely capitulated under the pressure of Trump’s racist rhetoric, and as a result, 2016 will likely be the first presidential election where millions of voters will go to the ballot without critical protections under the Voting Rights Act.”
