Paul Ryan’s Dog Ate His Homework

In other News, Ryan Refuses to Denounce Trump’s Machado Comments, Because He Didn’t Hear Them Live

Appearing this morning on Fox News, Donald Trump doubled downed on his shocking and offensive previous comments about former Miss Universe Alicia Machado’s body. During the interview, Trump defended calling Ms. Machado “Miss Piggy” by saying that “she gained a massive amount of weight, and it was a real problem.” He went further, saying the following about her personality: “We had a real problem. Not only that, her attitude.”

As man of supposed family values, one would think that this would upset Speaker Ryan. But instead, Ryan first commended Trump’s debate performance and then refused to disavow Trump’s sexist comments on Machado when asked. Instead, clearly in an attempt to out-do the ‘dog ate my homework’ excuse, Ryan said he was busy working out during the Fox News interview, and therefore couldn’t possibly have an opinion on Trump’s sexist attacks.

Regardless of whether Speaker Ryan watched the comments live, or heard about them before his press conference but chose to duck the questions, or truly only learned about them during his press conference, we’re still left wondering: is Trump really the president Paul Ryan and House Republicans want for their daughters?

Speaker Ryan had the opportunity this morning to take the high road and disavow Trump’s sexist, grotesque comments. Instead, he hid behind his workout routine,” said Christie Stephenson of the DCCC. “Speaker Ryan, consider this an invitation to go on a morning run where we can discuss how your refusal to address these comments once again confirms that for you, party loyalty is more important than standing up for what’s right.”
