PENNLIVE EDITORIAL: Rep. Perry Has Gone A Step Too Far In Defaming Millions Of Veterans Who Just Happen To Be Democrats

Perry’s local editorial board slams his disparaging remarks toward veterans

Blistering.

That’s the only way to describe the takedown of Congressman Scott Perry by his local PennLive Editorial Board, which writes that “Perry has gone a step too far in defaming millions of veterans who just happen to be Democrats.”

The paper writes that Perry “has gone a step too far in fanning the flames of political division to hold onto his congressional seat,” and that “he should be ashamed.” Brutal.

Read the takedown for yourself:

  • Veterans throughout the nation are condemning Republican U.S. Rep. Scott Perry (R-Pa.) for insulting their sacrifice and service to this country. Many are demanding an apology. They have reason to do so.
  • Speaking on the Chris Stigall podcast that was beamed throughout the world, Perry actually accused his fellow veterans who are Democrats of “hating the military.” He questioned their motives for service and accused them of risking their lives on battlefields around the world for political gain.
  • According to Perry, they just want to get a “credential” to run for office.
  • Really? A man or woman would strap on a gun and body armor on some God-forsaken mountain in Iraq or Afghanistan to burnish a CV. Really?
  • Millions of Democrats, like millions of Republicans and independents, have served the United States in every branch of the military, many risking their lives in war zones overseas. Thousands of veterans who happen to be Democrats are now living without arms or legs; blind or deaf, and battling the perpetual nightmare of PTSD. All that to impress a few thousand voters?
  • Well, voters should be impressed. And so should Rep. Perry.
  • He, above all, should know anyone who faithfully serves in the U.S. military deserves admiration and respect.
  • Perry served in the Pennsylvania Army National Guard for nearly 40 years and retired in 2019 as a Brigadier General. He was a helicopter pilot who was deployed in Iraq. He flew 44 combat missions and served as a commander at the Fort Indiantown Gap National Training Site.
  • Every American should thank Rep. Perry for his service. And he should thank every American veteran for theirs. That’s why his flippant attack on his fellow veterans is so appalling. He knows better.
  • Soldiers are supposed to stand together — to have each other’s backs — on the battlefield and at home. Rep. Perry has forgotten that noble promise. He should be ashamed.
  • A phalanx of voters and elected officials have spoken out to condemn Perry for attacking Democratic veterans. Some have called his comments shameful. They are right.
  • Many – mostly Democrats — have expressed downright disgust. More Republicans should so the same. Such attacks on men and women who have served our country with distinction are nothing less than disgusting. It degrades our military and sows political division within its ranks. This doesn’t help our nation. It will destroy it.
  • The people of District 10 deserve better from their congressman. Rep. Perry has gone a step too far in fanning the flames of political division to hold onto his congressional seat. It must stop now.
  • We join members of the Democratic Veterans Caucus in demanding retired Brigadier Gen. Perry apologize to the noble veterans whose honor he has so callously defamed.
  • Pennsylvanians deserve better. Americans deserve better. Our veterans deserve better.
  • Rep. Perry should be ashamed.
