Pete Sessions’ “Closed Rule” Washington

When Congressman Sessions isn’t voting with his party to raise working families’ health care premiums or deliver a tax handout to big corporations, he’s breaking records. Unfortunately for those of us who aren’t career politicians, Sessions is breaking the kind of records that exemplify what’s wrong with Washington.

As Roll Call reported:

Chairman Sessions’ Rules Committee “broke a record Monday night for the number of closed rules — a mechanism for setting up floor debate on a bill without amendments — reported in a single Congress.”

That’s right: the Washington that Congressman Sessions is fighting for has no space for compromise, and no space for elected Representatives to find common ground and improve legislation to help working families make ends meet, save for their kids’ college, and bring down the cost of health care. That may be good for lockstep partisans like Congressman Sessions who do well for themselves when Washington is broken, but it’s bad for the rest of us.
