Peter Meijer Again Chooses Gun Lobby Over Children

Hundreds of mass shootings. 19 children killed in Uvalde. 10 Black Americans massacred in Buffalo. Three shootings in Michigan last weekend – and countless other acts of senseless gun violence.

These aren’t just numbers – they represent loved ones lost and lives cut short. Last night, Peter Meijer voted against bipartisan, commonsense legislation that seeks to address the gun violence epidemic. Meijer voted against:

  • Raising the age to purchase a semi-automatic weapon from 18 to 21;

  • Banning the sale of large capacity magazines;

  • Cracking down gun trafficking and straw purchases;

  • Outlawing bump stocks, which effectively turn semiautomatic weapons into machine guns – what was used in the 2017 Las Vegas massacre;

  • Outlawing ghost guns, which lack traceable serial numbers and have increasingly been used in violent crimes;

  • And promoting the safe storage of firearms through precautionary measures.

But it’s no surprise Meijer is standing in the way of commonsense, life-saving reforms. He’s locked in a heated primary with Trump-endorsed challenger John Gibbs and would rather try to score political points than take steps to limit gun violence in West Michigan.

“When Peter Meijer had the chance to protect his community and address senseless gun violence, he voted no. Instead he chose trying save his political career over supporting bipartisan reforms to stop violence,” said DCCC spokesperson Elena Kuhn.
