In the latest sign that Peter Meijer’s re-election prospects are in trouble, his Trump-backed primary challenger John Gibbs is headed to Mar-a-Lago for a fundraiser with the former president tomorrow.
The cash boost to Gibbs’ campaign at the end of the fundraising quarter is the latest blow for Peter Meijer, who is on track to lose his primary. Recent polling of likely Republican voters in MI-03 showed that 62 percent would back another candidate over Meijer.
That explains why Meijer and his allies are getting nervous. Detroit News reports that a pop-up Super PAC which “shares connections to players who have supported” Meijer launched last month – raising questions about whether the outside group was formed to bail out his endangered campaign.
“Peter Meijer was already one of the most vulnerable Republicans in Congress as West Michigan trends away from him, and now he has a massive primary problem on his hands,” said DCCC spokesperson Elena Kuhn. “Expect the race to the bottom in Michigan’s Third Congressional District to only get uglier as Trump continues to boost John Gibbs.”
