Police Week Shines a Bright Light on Republicans Abandoning Local Law Enforcement and Crime Victims

House Republicans stand idly by as hundreds of millions of dollars dedicated to public safety programs are cut

Over the last few weeks, the Department of Justice has cancelled hundreds of millions of dollars in public safety grants around the country, resulting in sudden and harmful cuts in services to programs dedicated to improving public safety, solving crimes and protecting crime victims.

Mental health care for local police, tools and resources to help investigators solve crimes, violence prevention programs, and victim support services, such as human trafficking and domestic violence victims – all have been on the Republican chopping block.

Taken together, these sweeping cuts will devastate community efforts to tackle crime and violence and support victims and survivors, all the while making our communities less safe.

House Republicans? They’ll send press releases promising they support law enforcement and public safety, but they won’t lift a finger to save precious services their communities need. What’s more, they are getting ready to move forward on enacting even deeper cuts to federal law enforcement as ordered by the Trump administration’s latest budget demands.

DCCC Spokesperson Viet Shelton:
“Talk is cheap – and so are Republicans when it comes to supporting law enforcement, solving crimes, and assisting victims.”
