In a 424-page ethics report released last week, Office of Congressional Ethics recommended that “non-cooperative” Schweikert be subpoenaed
For over a year, Congressman David Schweikert has been telling reporters that he welcomes the multiple ethics probes into his office, claiming that “this is the process we needed” to prove his office did nothing wrong.
Turns out, Schweikert is all talk. Last week, we learned that he refused to comply with an Office of Congressional Ethics investigation into misused taxpayer resources and campaign funds, forcing the office to recommend that Schweikert be subpoenaed.
Meanwhile, reporters and Republicans back home spent the weekend speculating about Schweikert’s rapidly declining re-election prospects. As Arizona Republic columnist Laurie Roberts told 12News’ Brahm Resnik yesterday, “The two warning signs for David Schweikert are, as you pointed out, the amount—the huge amount he spent in legal fees defending against this thing that he says ‘isn’t really about him.’ And number two, the fact that he refused to cooperate with a House Congressional Ethics Investigation, that’s a big ol’ red flag.”
With a House Ethics Committee investigation into Schweikert still ongoing and pressure ramping up back home, the question now is: will Schweikert try to stonewall yet another investigation into his potentially illegal behavior?
Here’s a look at what voters in AZ-06 were watching this weekend:
